16. Das israelitische Bethhaus in Pesth

Large-scale, beautifully coloured watercolour view of the synagogue in Pest. It was based on a steel engraving made around 1857 from a drawing by Karl Schumann, which inspired many later versions. The item is presumably the same age as the main picture, and some of the figures appear here, but far fewer people are depicted. In the lower right-hand corner is presumably the creator's name (Gall S.), which we have not been able to decipher.

On 15 December 1850, the presbytery of the Pest Jewish community decided to build a representative synagogue on Dohány Street. Several architects (including József Hild) were asked to design it, and after much deliberation, Ludwig Förster, the architect of the Leopoldstädter Tempel, the synagogue in Tempelgasse in Vienna, was finally commissioned with it. The temple was inaugurated on 6 September 1859.

Dimensions: 355 x 420 mm. Restored and cropped. With a repaired loss at the lower centre (affecting about half of the text and a small detail of the image).

Starting price: 150 000,-
